Christ-Esteem and our Relationships with Others

Self-esteem has been a buzz word since my youth. We learn about it early and It is a building block in the foundation of how we relate to others. If we love ourselves, we do well in this life and within our relationships. If we don’t love ourselves, life becomes harder and more difficult. Self-esteem is critical to a healthy life.

What would God say about self-esteem? There is not a lot about this topic in the Bible. But Jesus might have seen it as a problem. Why? Because God sent Jesus into the world to provide us the love we need to be okay with God and with ourselves. We could even call it Christ-esteem. God loves us through his son, Jesus, giving us forgiveness and righteousness. Christ-esteem is not about what we do, but rather what God gives us.

We cannot give to others what we do not possess ourselves. If we have been loved and accepted in Christ Jesus, we value ourselves and we can love and accept others. 1John 4:19 states, “We love because He first loved us.” God and his love for us through Jesus, and our love for others, is where life comes together. God wants to provide all that is needed for us to live life at its best. Our self-esteem should be based on all God has given us with the center being Jesus Christ.
