Why is it important to let our walls down? When we take our walls down, we let the deepest part of us be exposed. This is important because this is where God does His greatest work together with the Holy Spirit.
We can ignore who we are and what is inside of us and just ask God to work on what is outside of ourselves. When our faith life is based on what is outside of ourselves, we can miss what is most important.
Taking our walls down in relationships with others can be very enriching, as well. We were created by God for relationships. When we reveal to others who we are, we can connect with them in the most life-fulfilling ways. So why is this challenging? It makes us vulnerable. Our feelings can get hurt. We may be rejected. We may be judged. People may gossip about us.
No matter who we talk to there is a risk. Yet, this is a risk that God can use to bless us in a great way. What can help us take the risk? It is the acceptance that we are given in Christ Jesus through his grace. St. Paul wrote, in 1 Timothy 1:15 “Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners - of whom I am the worst.” Talk about putting yourself out there! Paul knew could let his walls down because he knew he was covered in God’s grace.
Acts 2:27 states after the people had heard the gospel they were “cut to the heart.” Their walls came down. They realized they were responsible for Christ’s death. They received life-changing grace. Because of God’s grace, we don’t have to worry about being rejected or judged. We are accepted in Christ!
