The Holy Spirit as a Deposit

“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory.” — Ephesians 1:13–14

The Meaning of the Deposit

A deposit is a first installment or pledge of something greater still to come. In Ephesians 1, the apostle Paul uses this image to describe the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives.

Because of Jesus’ perfect life and gracious work on our behalf, we can experience new birth. God makes us His children and dwells within us through the Holy Spirit. The Spirit breathes spiritual life into us and enlightens our understanding of Scripture, so we do not rely on the written Word apart from God’s active presence.

A Promise of What Is to Come

The Holy Spirit is a deposit because the best is yet to come. We cannot attain perfection in our earthly lives; we still miss the mark. We are called to love God and love others, yet even our best efforts are inconsistent. When we demand perfection from ourselves, we often become frustrated and may project that frustration onto others.

God grants us perfection only through Jesus. Meanwhile, He gives us the Holy Spirit to accompany and guide us throughout our journey.

How the Holy Spirit Works in Us

The Holy Spirit shapes our lives by:

  • bringing to our attention what is not of God;
  • convicting us when we miss the mark;
  • reminding us that Jesus Christ brings us into God’s grace; and
  • revealing God’s grace through an honest understanding of our shortcomings.

Through this work, we are given the opportunity to make positive changes. The Holy Spirit is God’s great deposit in us—a down payment that guarantees the eternal life still to come.
