What does it mean to be born again?

John 3:5–6: Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.”

A New Life Given by God

The phrase “born again” is one many Christians have heard often, but it can still raise an important question: what does it mean? In John’s Gospel, Jesus uses this language to describe a new kind of life that comes from God. It is not simply about turning over a new leaf or trying harder to be a better person. It is about receiving spiritual life through God’s grace, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the gift of Jesus Christ.

For Christians, being born again means that God changes us from the inside out. This new birth is not something we create for ourselves. It is something God gives. Through Baptism, Christians understand that God gives His grace, His forgiveness, and His Holy Spirit. As we grow in the understanding of this gift, we begin to see how deeply life-changing it truly is.

The Pull of the Flesh

Even after receiving this gift, Christians still know the pull of what Jesus calls “the flesh.” The flesh looks away from God and tries to find ultimate security, identity, and satisfaction in the things of this world. Sometimes we place God’s gifts above God Himself. Family, money, success, comfort, reputation, and security can all become substitutes for the One who gave them.

This does not mean those things are bad. They are often blessings. The danger comes when they become our highest priority. The flesh wants to survive and control life on its own terms. The Spirit, however, leads us back to God and reminds us of where our true hope belongs.

Our Hope Is in Christ

Birth in the Spirit happens as we come to understand what we have received in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit convicts us when we miss God’s way of life, but He does not leave us in guilt or despair. He brings us to Jesus, who suffered, died, and rose again for us. Christ is our ultimate hope.

To be born again, then, is to receive a new beginning from God. It is to be drawn away from trusting in the world as our deepest source of life and to be brought back to Jesus. The love of God in Christ gives us new birth through the Spirit, and that new birth changes how we live, what we value, and where we place our hope.
